Nature unleashed in China: a tornado sweeps away everything in its path, killing five people

Steph Deschamps / April 28,  2024

Five people were killed by a tornado in the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou on Saturday. Thirty-three other residents were injured, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday.

The storm damaged some 140 industrial buildings, but homes were spared.

Rescue work is already largely complete in the provincial capital, which has a population of 18 million. The city is considered one of China's major economic centers.

A week ago, Guangzhou and the neighboring province of Guangdong were hit by torrential rains. At least four people were killed and 100,000 others had to be evacuated.
